PITTSBURGH — Safety and compliance with state and federal guidelines is always top of mind for Dagostino Electronic Services and Friday, DES’ leadership team held a meeting with foremen and project managers to discuss new Silica Dust Exposure guidelines set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

DES Director of Operations Bob Weiss discusses new Silica Dust Exposure guidelines set forth by OSHA.

DES’ Safety Control Plan was also discussed in response to the new guidelines.

Crystalline silica, particles 100 times smaller than ordinary sand, is created when cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling and crushing stone, rock, concrete, brick, block and mortar.

When inhaled in large quantities, silica has been known to cause serious diseases including the incurable lung disease silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease.

While the risk to our workers is low when compared to other trades, there is still a risk.

To protect our workers on the job, DES has invested in new silica dust control products from Hilti.

The products, including drills and attachable dust control systems, are designed to keep our workers safe and in compliance with OSHA regulations for Silica Dust Exposure.

“It’s our obligation to keep you safe and to make sure that the practices that you’re following in the field are safe for you and safe for the customer,” said David Boger, Director of Special Projects at DES.

Each crew member has also been asked to limit cutting and drilling of holes in silica-related material such as concrete floors, concrete block walls to no more than 100 holes a day.
