WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has signed a bill into law banning the government use of Dahua and Hikvision security cameras.

The manufacturers have ties to the Chinese government and concerns have risen in recent months about the security risks and network vulnerabilities associated with their products.

The ban includes both purchasing and using existing equipment, so government agencies will have to remove Dahua and Hikvision branded products. Government-funded contracts are also included.

The ban goes into effect on August 13, 2019, one year from the date the bill was signed into law.

Dagostino Electronic Services has never sold Hikvision or Dahua cameras and never will.

“Our customer’s security and our reputation are far more important than saving a few dollars,” DES Security Manager Mark Gillenberger said.

Dahua and Hikvision cameras are cheaper in comparison to commercial grade equipment and some integrators use them to win business.

In addition, the cameras are often rebranded and sold by other companies.

Security-industry trade publication IPVM has a list of companies on its website that resell products from Dahua and Hikvision labeled as their own. Dozens of companies are listed and many are well-known:

Customers are advised to buy security products from trusted security system integrators like DES, who only use secure, commercial grade equipment from reputable manufacturers. Never purchase security equipment online or from big box stores that sell products under their private label.
